Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-10-06
Eelam Lab ("we", "us") is an independent AI lab based in Canada. This policy explains how we handle personal information in line with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and its ten fair information principles.
1. Accountability
We are responsible for the personal information we control. Our Privacy Officer oversees compliance and can be reached at privacy@eelamlab.com.
2. Why we collect information
We collect contact details (name, email, country), dialect and contribution interests to invite you to contribute, to plan regional recording, and to understand which Tamil dialects are represented.
When you contribute recordings, text or other material, we use it to train and evaluate Nila language and speech models. Models and datasets built with contributions may be licensed to third parties.
3. Consent
We ask for your express consent before collecting your information, and we record the exact wording and version of the consent you gave. You may withdraw consent at any time, subject to the limits described under Retention.
4. Limiting collection
We collect only what we need. We do not ask for government identifiers, payment details or precise location. Please avoid including other people's personal information in your contributions unless they have agreed.
5. Use, disclosure and retention
We use information only for the purposes above. We do not sell your contact details. We share personal information only with service providers who host and process data on our behalf (for example cloud hosting and database providers), under contracts that require them to protect it. Some providers may store data outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be subject to local law.
Contact details are kept while you remain a contributor and deleted within 30 days of a verified deletion request. Contributions already used to train a model cannot be extracted from that model, but will be excluded from future training runs and datasets.
6. Accuracy
You can ask us to correct your details at any time by emailing us.
7. Safeguards
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is limited to team members who need it. We review our safeguards regularly and will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada of any breach that creates a real risk of significant harm.
8. Openness
This policy is public, written in English and Tamil, and updated when our practices change.
9. Your access and deletion rights
You may ask what information we hold about you, request a copy, correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email privacy@eelamlab.com from the address you signed up with, with the subject "Data deletion request" or "Access request". We will respond within 30 days.
10. Challenging compliance
If you have concerns, contact our Privacy Officer at privacy@eelamlab.com. If you are not satisfied, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca).
